Alternate Foundation Pathway – Learning Outcomes
All foundation courses must be equivalent to the New Zealand Qualification Framework (NZQF) Level 5 or higher, which is equivalent to the first year of a bachelor’s degree. Certain specific learning outcomes must be covered.

Course Title: Human Anatomy & Physiology

Learning Outcomes Required:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the body regions, cavities, anatomical planes, directional terminology and anatomical references of the human body including the use of appropriate anatomical terminology.
  2. Understand the anatomy and physiology of the integumentary system including its protective functions and maintaining homeostasis.
  3. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the nerve, muscle, fascia, bone and identify the main bones of the appendicular and axial skeleton and their parts.
  4. Know the histology of different tissues and organs including bone, muscle, nerve and the different epithelial tissues.
  5. Have a firm understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, urinary, reproductive (including menstrual cycle), endocrine and lympho-immune systems.
Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the structure, function and various categories of joints, their classification and examples of these classifications.
  6. Demonstrate and understanding of basic embryology.

Course Title: Biochemistry

Learning Outcomes Required:

  1. Describe the structure, properties and functions of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, enzymes and nucleic acids.
  2. Outline cellular metabolism and bioenergetics.
  3. Discuss chemical communication at a cellular and organ level.

Course Title: Biophysics

Learning Outcomes Required:

  1. Units and measurements, errors. Kinematics, motion in 1D.
  2. Velocity, speed, acceleration, Newton’s laws, force, mass, friction, gravitation. Work energy and power.
  3. Momentum, conservation laws, simple harmonic oscillator, scalars and vectors, levers, generalization of kinematics to three dimensions.
  4. Understand the effects of force and torque on the motion of physical bodies and the various forms of energy such bodies may possess.

Course Title: Microbiology

Learning Outcomes Required:

  1. To understand cell biology (bacterial morphology), genetics, metabolism and physiology of key microbial groups.
  2. To understand important physiological characteristics of microorganisms, including: pathogenicity, motility, and unique forms of energy production.
  3. Describe the microanatomy of a cell; identify and describe the function of each major cytoplasmic organelle.
  4. Homeostatic, the cellular environment, functions of the cell membrane, cytoskeleton and cell movement, cell signaling, specialised cells
  5. Chromosomes, the cell cycle and mitosis
