The Call to Adventure: Early Aspirations in Healthcare
Billie-Rose’s journey began in Christchurch, where she always felt a calling towards a career in healthcare. As a student deeply involved in the sciences and working part-time as a support worker, she believed her path was set. Dentistry seemed to be her future, but life had other plans.
A Twist in Career Plans
Her adventure took a surprising turn during a school career talk by the chiropractic college. “I’ve always been drawn to helping people,” she recalls, “but I hadn’t thought about chiropractic care until that talk. It sparked something in me, revealing a new career possibility I had never considered.”
Crossing the Threshold: Exploring Chiropractic Beyond Social Media
The global pandemic thwarted her plans to attend the College’s open day in person. Undeterred, Billie-Rose attended virtual talks instead. These sessions offered a deeper understanding of chiropractic care, far beyond the glimpses she’d seen on social media. Encouraged to observe a chiropractor, she shadowed a local practitioner. “I loved it, especially hearing about the impact they had on their patients’ lives and wellbeing.”
Trials and Tribulations: Building Bonds with a Chiropractic Family
Leaving Christchurch for Auckland was a significant change for Billie-Rose, a true Christchurch girl and family person. Yet, she knew in her heart that studying chiropractic care at the College was her destiny. The transition was eased by the welcoming and friendly environment she found there. “It’s like one big family. To be a chiropractor, you need to be a people person, and other students were bubbly and keen to put themselves out there.”
Finding Allies and Mentors
Since starting at the College, Billie-Rose discovered that the values of the staff and lecturers matched her own. “They want to help people express themselves fully through chiropractic care. The way the College cares about each student individually is really appealing. It’s such a nurturing environment.”
“Every day is a step towards a future helping people achieve their best health, naturally.”
Creating a Home in Two Cities
Billie-Rose’s journey of self-discovery and professional growth has not only equipped her with the skills of a future chiropractor but also a sense of belonging in two cities. Her friends back in Christchurch eagerly anticipate her return to provide chiropractic care. “Now I have a home in Auckland and in Christchurch – and that’s pretty cool!” she concludes with a smile.
